Area codes 803 and 839 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the central part of the U.S. State of South Carolina. The numbering plan area (NPA) is anchored by the city of Columbia, the state capital. It also includes most of the South Carolina portions of the Charlotte, North Carolina and Augusta, Georgia metropolitan areas.
Original numbering plan area 803
Area code 803 is one of the original 86 area codes assigned in 1947, when it was assigned to served the entire state. In 1995, the Upstate was split off into a separate numbering plan area with area code 864. Until then, South Carolina had been one of the most populated states with just one area code.
While this was intended as a long-term solution, the rapid growth of telecommunication service in Columbia and the coastal region, forced additional mitigation action for 803 within two years. As a result, in 1998 the coastal region was assigned area code 843.
In May 2020, numbering plan area 803 was converted into an overlay plan by adding area code 839 to the plan area. The new area code is used for new subscribers. This implementation made ten-digit dialing mandatory in the numbering plan area as of April 2020. Previously, a permissive ten-digit dialing began in late October 2019.
Area codes 843 and 854 serve the eastern third of South Carolina. They cover the Grand Strand, the Lowcountry, the Pee Dee, and the Sandhills. Major cities in the region include Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Beaufort, Hilton Head Island and Florence. 843 is the main area code, while 854 is an overlay that was implemented in 2015.
843 entered service on March 22, 1998, as a split from 803. In 2013, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator determined that 843 would run out of numbers in 2015. In addition to the rapid growth of the Grand Strand, Charleston and Beaufort/Hilton Head areas, most of the southern portion of the area code is part of the Savannah, Georgia LATA, meaning several numbers in Savannah's area code 912 are not available for use.
On December 9, 2013, it was decided that the 843 territory would receive the state's first overlay, to be effective probably in early 2015. On December 16, 2013, the new area code of 854 was announced. 854 entered service on March 14, 2015. Permissive dialing continued until September 18, 2015, during which both seven- and ten-digit dialing were allowed. On September 19, 2015, ten-digit dialing became mandatory in the 843/854 territory. The first new 854 numbers were issued sometime in the fall of 2015.
Area code 864 is an area code in the U.S. state of South Carolina that covers Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson and 12 surrounding counties in upstate South Carolina. It was split from area code 803 on December 3, 1995. Until then, South Carolina had been one of the most populated states served by just one area code.
Other cities in the 864 territory include Clemson, Gaffney, Greer and Mauldin.
With 803 overlaid with area code 839 in May 2020, 864 is the last area of South Carolina that has not been overlaid. As such, it is one of the few urbanized area codes where seven-digit dialing is still possible. Under the most recent projections, it will likely stay that way at least through 2029.
